EXTERNAL CAUSES (V01-Y98)
There were 385 deaths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians attributed to External causes (V01-Y98) in 2013. Males died of external causes of death more often than females, with 171 male deaths per 100 female deaths. Intentional self-harm (X60-X84) and Land transport accidents (V01-V89) were the two leading External causes of death for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians in 2013.
Suicide was the fifth leading cause of death of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. In 2013, there were 138 deaths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians due to suicide, 99 of whom were male and 39 of whom were female. The age-standardised death rate for suicide was twice as high in both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander males and females than non-Indigenous males and females (rate ratios of 2.1 and 2.4 respectively).
There were 72 deaths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians due to Land transport accidents in 2013. Of these, 39 were male and 33 were female. The age-standardised death rate for Land transport accidents was more than two times higher for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons compared with non-Indigenous persons (13.4 per 100,000 and 5.6 per 100,000 respectively, rate ratio 2.4).
